چکیده

Elwood, J. H., and Pemberton, J. (1971). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 46, 332. Infant mortality in Belfast. Data on all livebirths and infant deaths occurring to residents in Belfast 1963-5 and in Birmingham 1964 were analysed in order to examine possible reasons why the infant mortality rate in Belfast (29 *4 per 1000 livebirths) was higher than in Birmingham (21 4). The hypothesis that the excess infant mortality in Belfast was mainly due to a higher proportion of infants born to high parity Belfast mothers was tested and found to be untenable. Though significant differences between the distributions of livebirths by parity in the two cities were demonstrated, they could have accounted for only about 12% of the excess. Differences between the two livebirth distributions by birthweight were more important and accounted for 40% of the excess infant mortality in Belfast. A high mortality rate attributed to postnatal asphyxia and atelectasis (I.C.D. No. 762) was noted in this city.

Anencephalus and spina bifida in Belfast (1964-1968).

AT the beginning of this century in Belfast, the infant mortality rate was 153 per 1,000 livebirths; by 1970, the rate had fallen to 28 per 1,000 livebirths (Elwood, 1973). On the other hand, the contribution of congenital malformations to the infant death rate has altered only slightly and it is reasonable to assume that as mortality and morbidity continue to fall the relative importance of co...

Maternal, infant and social factors associated with birthweight.

IN 1900, the Infant Mortality Rate (I.M.R.) in Belfast was 153 per 1000 livebirths (Elwood, 1973). By 1971, the rate had fallen to 26 per 1000 (Registrar General's Report, 1973). This figure is, however, one of the highest in any city of comparable size in the United Kingdom. The I.M.R. in Birmingham in that year was 20 per 1000, in Bristol it was 17 and in Stoke on Trent 16, while even Teeside...
